9th-12th Grade Acting Classes
Matthews Playhouse is excited to offer the following wide range of courses for our High School students, specializing in Musical Theatre, Acting and Technical Theatre. Our 9th-12th Grade Programming is for serious-minded theatre students who are committed to attending classes each week and spending time outside of the classroom working on material. No experience is necessary.

**Students who participate in the Fall 2024 and/or Winter 2025 School of Theatre classes are invited to audition for the 2025 Spring School of Theatre Productions, and will be eligible for a role based on availability. Receiving a role is not guaranteed**

Techniques (First Year Level)

Course Description: Acting 101
Welcome to our dynamic course, centered on scene study and audition
techniques! Delve into the art of acting with a focus on refining a practical
approach tailored to each individual actor's needs. Whether aspiring to
grace the stage, television, or film, this course equips actors with
invaluable tools for success. Discover the intricacies of character
development, from giving your character a distinctive voice to embodying their physical traits. Through intensive scene study, actors will deepen their understanding of character dynamics and motivations. Additionally, the course offers comprehensive instruction on audition techniques, empowering actors to confidently navigate the audition process. Gain insights into selecting and preparing audition material that showcases your strengths effectively. Join us on this transformative journey as we unlock the secrets of compelling performance and audition success!

9th-12th Grade Acting 102- Scene Study and Acting Techniques (First Year Level)
Offered: Winter 2025; Wednesdays
Fee: $250
Course Description: Acting 102
Building upon the foundation laid in the first semester, students continue their exploration of acting with a focus on intermediate techniques and concepts. Through an in-depth study of character dynamics, students will deepen their understanding of dramatic storytelling and develop a more nuanced approach to performance. They will explore advanced methods of character analysis and interpretation, honing their ability to create fully realized and emotionally resonant characters. Additionally, students will further refine their vocal and physical techniques, learning how to effectively communicate with clarity and expressiveness on stage. Through scene study projects and ensemble work, students will cultivate collaboration and teamwork skills, fostering a supportive and creative learning environment. By the end of this semester, students will have developed a greater sense of confidence and versatility as actors, ready to take on more complex challenges in their acting journey.

10th-12th Grade Acting 201- Intermediate Acting Techniques (Second Year Level)
Offered: Fall 2024; Wednesdays

Course Description: Acting 201
Building upon the foundation laid in Level 101, Level 201 delves deeper into the craft of acting, focusing on intermediate acting techniques and character exploration. Through scene study, improvisation, and character analysis, students will deepen their understanding of dramatic storytelling and develop a more nuanced approach to performance. Advanced instruction on vocal and physical techniques will enhance students' ability to inhabit their characters authentically and connect with audiences on a deeper level. Additionally, students will explore advanced audition techniques and receive personalized coaching to further refine their audition skills. Level 201 challenges students to expand their artistic range and develop a deeper understanding of the actor's craft, preparing them for more complex acting challenges in future levels.

10th-12th Grade Acting 202- Advanced Acting Methods (Second Year Level)
Offered: Winter 2025; Wednesdays
Fee: $250
Course Description: Acting 202
In Level 202, students will refine their acting skills and techniques through advanced scene study, character development, and performance exercises. Through intensive exploration of acting methods such as Stanislavski, Meisner, and Method acting, students will deepen their understanding of the actor's process and develop a versatile approach to performance. Advanced improvisation and ensemble work will challenge students to push their boundaries and explore new avenues of creativity. Additionally, students will receive individualized coaching and feedback to help them develop a unique artistic voice and prepare for professional opportunities in the performing arts industry. Level 202 is designed to challenge and inspire students as they continue their journey towards becoming confident and versatile actors.
